What’s New in Staffing Trends?

January 23, 2023

Staffing employment rebounded in January, according to data from the American Staffing Association (ASA). This was after a lull in December, which most staffing companies attributed to the holiday.

Medical staffing firms, in particular, are expected to continue seeing a high demand for positions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of new health care positions rose to an average of 47,000 per month in 2022, indicating that providers and health care companies are recognizing the need for robust staffing to handle growing patient needs. This means hospitals, health care organizations, and providers will actively recruit staff in 2023, often through medical staffing agencies and traveling nurse agencies.

Nurses are specifically in demand. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates that,

by 2030, the need for additional nurses will reach more than 275,000.

Workers Want More Flexibility

Many workers prefer contract and freelance work compared to traditional full-time jobs. As a result, staffing firms will need to accommodate flexible schedules that meet the needs of candidates. Caregivers, for example, primarily women, prefer freelance work, which offers more flexibility in their schedules.

Work/life balance became more critical to workers across industries during the pandemic. “People realized what was most important, and they shifted their priorities,” said staffing consultant Darin Pasch. “Now, it’s about building your work schedule around your life—not the other way around.”
