The National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC) and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) back in August announced plans to merge their organizations. Recently, they announced that the two advocacy groups would operate as one hopefully by July 2024.
NAHC is the largest professional association representing the interests of chronically ill, disabled, and dying Americans of all ages and the caregivers who provide them with in-home health and hospice services. NHPCO is the nation’s largest and oldest membership association for providers who care for people affected by serious and life-limiting illnesses.
The two organizations, which collaborate on multiple advocacy efforts, see the merger as an opportunity to advance their mutual goal of meeting the needs of providers, patients, families, and communities. This is particularly so in an evolving American health system with increased community-based care options available and issues that impact their stakeholders, such as workforce shortages and potential Medicaid changes. The two groups feel that together they will have a stronger voice to affect change.
“One plus one equals three,” Bill Dombi, president of NAHC, said at the association’s conference in mid-October. Dombi emphasized the strength and reach that the organizations hope to achieve by merging. “It’s also one plus one equals one. This [merger] is not to maintain two organizations under an umbrella. This aims to create one single organization integrated from top to bottom, with recognition that health care at home is a broad breadth of services that we’re there to represent.”
